The
craze for cosmetics is as old as womanhood and
widespread across the globe. Today, the earnings
of the world's cosmetic industry have crashed
the 100-billion-dollar barrier and are soaring
at an annual rate of up to 10 percent. India's
market for cosmetics and toiletries is estimated
to be around Rs 4,500 crore in the organized sector
alone. Another Rs 3,000 crore is assessed to be
the contribution of the unorganized sector, mainly
offering traditional herbal and men's cosmetics.
All of which is expected to take off at a phenomenal
15 percent every year - underlining the rising
profile of India's economy in the new, open market
regime of the new millennium.
As elsewhere, India's cosmetics industry is as
old as its civilization. Traces of its rich heritage
have been found among the relics unearthed at
the site of the Indus Valley Civilization of 5,000
years ago. With modern technology, this ancient
art of personal adornment could be transformed
into a dynamic, international trendsetter of unlimited
potential.
Far-researching formulae for success in the terms
of products are already available with the Institute
of Natural & Modern Cosmetech (InMC) as outlined
